Some Quick News Items--

...Stacey Farley's 2nd annual House District 40 Garage Sale Saturday 8/2 was a big success. We netted more than $300, after paying for the

Arapahoe Democratic Party (HD 40) Booth for the Bennett Harvest Festival & Parade. Stacey was the prime mover. Her idea, her place, her

follow-through. Her two garage sales last year & this year easily account for the major portion of money in our House District 40 account. Others

who made big contributions of time, money or goods--Karen Wilde, Laverne Palmer, Diane & Bruce Smith, Randy McElveny, Sheryle

Hutter, Trish Bedoya, Martha Karnopp, Jim Chaput, Tom Tobiassen, Karen Hart, Teague Van Buren, Wanda Venters, Nellie Salaiz,

Frances Hardzinski...& whoever(s) contributed the LP records & the ornate, exotic brass serving made in Iran. Some of our best

volunteer/contributors came from other House Districts--Ron Adams, HD 39; Peggy Stahl, HD 36; Sharon Pearce & JM Fay, HD 41.

Democratic House District 40 Meeting Results 10-12:30 6/21/2008

This report was recorded & written by Laverne Palmer, Neighborhood Leader, Precinct 327

with additional comments by John Fulton, Chair, HD 40

Meeting started with a brief introduction from candidates or their representatives. Suzanne Williams, Nathan Wilkes, Martha Karnopp, Karen Wilde,

Barbara Yamrick, Barack Obama, Mark Udall, Hank Eng. All candidates are looking forward to working with HD 40 and need support.

HD 40 Neighborhood Leaders & others can get training on Voter Activation Network (VAN). Sessions are held on selected Monday evenings (7-9 pm)

at Arapahoe County Party HQ, 15445 E. Iliff Avenue, Unit C. Check Events/Calendar link for VAN training dates.

John Showalter conducts these training sessions.

Training/certification to collect Voter Registration Forms will be offered to those volunteers who want to sign up potential

voters on the spot.  If you are not certified to collect Voter Registration Forms, it is illegal to collect them.  You can pass them out, but the

individuals must deliver or mail the forms him/herself.  In Arapahoe County mail to: Arapahoe County Clerk & Recorder, C/O Elections, 1560 Broadway

Suite 200, Denver, CO 80202.  You CAN NOT give out stamps to help in the mailing of Registration forms. If mailed, voter registration forms

must be mailed by October 1st--5 days prior to the October 6th registration deadline.

Small Group breakout sessions by precinct yielded these recommendations:

The key thing we can do for Candidates is to match Volunteers & Candidates. This might work in one of two ways:

1. If Candidates send lists of their walking schedules to utahooksem@comcast.net, we will post the dates. Volunteers can contact the Candidate

& volunteer to walk with him/her. Calling ahead a day or two in advance will help the Candidate plan to make best use of your efforts to pitch. (If you

show up to walk for a Candidate, you certainly will be welcome.) We will try to provide the phone numbers for making your willingness to walk with a

Candidate as easy as possible.

2. If you as a Volunteer want to walk with/for a specific Candidate, we hope to provide you the dates & phone numbers to get in touch with the

Candidate directly.

KEY MESSAGE – Vote the full ballot. Top Down or Bottom Up. It will take Democrats at all levels to get the job done.

Technical Training is needed for Grass-root volunteers (Check out website www.hd40dems.com.

Fact sheets on candidates are needed (Check web site), AND WHERE THEY STAND ON ISSUES. Information is also needed on where the opponents

stand on those issues.

Voter Guide from Precinct 327 was well received by all in attendance.  It will be modified for use by House District 40.

Schedules for walking/phone calling/Major Literature Drops should be broken-down into hour increments. Volunteers can sign up based on time and

physical needs. Travel in PAIRS vs. GROUPS so as to not overwhelm or intimidate individuals.

If you want to be contacted with text messages by cell phone let us know.

Suggested Talking Points to make when communicating to individuals:

 “I am your neighbor."

“Regardless of your party affiliate, if you are unhappy with the status quo, regarding health care, employment, war, economy, etc. register

and vote democratic ticket from the top to the bottom.

Have some Voter Registration Forms to pass out. Forms can be accessed on line from the Arapahoe County website. Also we can provide forms to you.

Let us know: utahooksem@comcast.net. Again, do NOT collect them unless you are certified to do so. Deadline for Voter Registration  is 10/6/2008.

Look for opportunities to talk to people about why it is important to register and vote. (waiting in lines, grocery lines, Post Office etc.)

Consider holding House Parties.  If you would like to house a party, send us the date.Candidate. We'll put it on the Events/Calendar link & alert the

respective Candidate or Candidates who you want to hold the house party for. We will let the Candidate(s) know the time & place by posting the information

on the website. House Event Host will provide refreshments. spread the word & take RSVP about the event.

Commitments were also made for Garage Sales.  The Second Annual Stacey Farley HD 40 Garage Sale will be Saturday 8/2/08. Details to follow.

Invite Democrats, Independents, and Republicans who are interested in changing our current status (State & National) to events.

Through our website, email exchanges, phoning, meetings in groups or one-on-one try to build precincts by adding Neighborhood Leaders & Volunteers

whenever we can. Use VAN lists. Phoning is a quick, efficient way to reach many contacts who say they may be able to help. Where there are multiple

Precincts working together, you might want to consider having a group name/logo to represent all associated Precincts.

Our website www.hd40dems.com lists our Candidates. We will be adding photos of the Candidates to the site. The Arapahoe County Party website www.arapahoedems.org has additional information on Candidates not running in HD 40.

Candidates, please make sure that your material for distribution is informative, easy to handle, has enough weight so as to not crumple easily, but can be conveniently inserted into a plastic door hanger bag.

These people attended the 6/21 meeting: Martha Chapman & Rosemary Deherrera, Precinct Leaders, Precinct 325; Laverne Palmer & Robert

Graham, Precinct Leaders, Pedro Moczo, Art Blakley, 327; Dan Zuk, Super Captain, Precincts 328, 378-380; Steve Stanley, Super Captain,

Precincts 329,330, 374; Florine King, Tenille Jones, Precinct Leader, 374; Rebecca Conk-Wonder, Super Captain, Precincts 345-347; Matt Bryant,

Super Captain, Precincts 350-352; Lori Cooney, Super Captain, Precincts 354-356; Trish Bedoya, Precinct Leader, Precinct 356; Shannon Holck,

Super Captain, Precincts 357, 360; Debbie Milliser, Precinct Leader; Roz Reece, 357; Bruce Smith, Super Captain, Precincts 425-430; Sam March,

Precinct Leader, 429; Robin Woods, Precinct Leader, 426; Paul Cain, Precinct Leader, 430; State Senator Suzanne Williams, Senate District 28;

Karen Wilde, Candidate, HD 40; Ed Williams; John Stencel, representing Nathan Wilkes, Candidate State Senate, District 27; Barbara Yamrick,

Current Director & Candidate, RTD-District F; Sheryle Hutter, Campaign Manager, Karen Wilde; Joe Kay, Barack Obama Campaign Coordinator, HD 40;

Rachel Kruer, Arapahoe County Coordinator, Forward Colorado.

Three things worth noting:

1--Our Candidates generally do better in Precincts where we have Precinct Leaders. The Precinct Leader is the key person in the HD 40 Organization.

2--The primary "job" of Precinct Leaders is to use tools--like VAN--to find other volunteers in your Precinct.

3--This is the tip of the iceberg. We have Super Captains &/or Precinct Leaders in most of our Precincts. Our goal is to have two Precicnt Leaders/Precinct.

House District 40 Caucus turnout at Mission Viejo Elementary School topped 1,100 people Tuesday, 2/5/08. HD 40 Arapahoe County Caucus voters chose Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton nearly 7-4, helping carry Colorado for Obama. As predicted by pollsters who got it right this time, Super Tuesday did not settle the issue of who our Democratic Party Candidate will be come November. Clinton & Obama each won several states & many delegates.

The Arapahoe County Executive Committee recently passed the following resolution:

RESOLUTION TO BEGIN IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS AGAINST PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH AND VICE PRESIDENT RICHARD B.

CHENEY, as PROPOSED TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE ARAPAHOE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, COLORADO,  NOVEMBER 13, 2007.

The resolution was passed by a majority vote of more than 2-1 attending.

--This follows action of Jefferson County Democrats who reportedly passed a similar resolution last summer.

--At a recent joint meeting of House Districts 40 & 41, more than 20 people attending voted informally, but unanimously for a similar resolution on impeachment.

--Among others calling for impeachment are former Presidential candidate George McGovern, who writes he opposed Nixon's impeachment then & favors Bush/Cheney impeachments now.

--US Representative Robert Wexler's call for the House Judiciary Committee to look into impeachment proceedings has been endorsed by more than

180,000 people responding online.

Associated Press 10/11/2007

Saying the Republican Party no longer represented her values, Republican state Rep. Debbie Stafford of Aurora announced today she is switching parties, becoming the 40th Democrat in the state House of Representatives.

Stafford, 55, is a counselor and a minister from Aurora who represents Arapahoe and Elbert counties. (Our House District, House District 40.)

"Ideally, I find myself a moderate and I think I would be best suited for a third party. However, the reality that our political system is not designed for a third party voice to be strong," she said. "My answer was to join a party that better reflects my values and respects my contribution. I am not leaving the Republican Party as much as I believe the Republican Party left me."

Stafford said she had major issues with Republicans when she voted with Democrats last year to change a law which had made it harder for homeowners to sue developers over construction defects.
